William and Geneva came across an article encouraging younger fans disatisfied with the current season of anime to dig into the past and enjoy what came before. This prompted a discussion between the two hosts that led the two of them to conclude that fans of different generations approach the hobby and its fans very differently. This episode is pretty meta, but it’s a great listen for new fans and veterans alike. Required listening for anyone trying to understand the fans that came before them or came late to the party.

File me under Generation Two. I only had to deal with fansub tape-trading for a couple years before DBZ and Sailor Moon began airing on TV. Then another couple years when anime materialized in the local Suncoast…though in $35 single-episode VHS portions.
But I’m not bitter about how easy the new kids have it. I love that legit streaming is decreasing illegal downloads. It’s not eliminating fansubbing, but there are less people downloading them (I assume). But I also hope that disc releases don’t go away.
I have a sock filled with $50 in nickels. I could either spend it on a Panty & Stocking box set…or I could use it to bludgeon the guy who nixes that product.
You guys make the good point about why the new generation more openly accept the shitty specimens from the recent waves anime: It’s what’s being released and there isn’t much alternative. I think that’s true for all generations of fan; you learn to love what’s available.
But I also attribute that to maturity… My tastes when I was in my teens were mostly garbage in hindsight. It’s my hope that the new kids grow out of their own juvenile standards as they get older and explore richer content. These things are temporary.
Blasphemy!!!! You dare dont like the likes of the 80′s Bubblegum Crisis OVA series, FOR SHAME!!!!
Nah, jk. Ill be honest, when i first saw BGC I didnt care for it to much, then a year or so later went back to the OVA and was instantly absorbed into the universe which is pretty my my all time favorite anime at this point (Gundam at this point is trying to reclaim my number one spot, so its an ongoing civil war for now). Id say Geneva, give it another shot on down the future sometime, you might like it again.
I guess im more of a 3rd gen anime fan even though I was around the time during the 2nd gen fandom by the end of the 1990′s, and most of the stuff referenced I was nodding my head in agreement because I was kinda like “man, I remember those days for sure.” I remember when VHS tapes were that expensive (especially for me since i wanted to continue past that 52 episode mark of DBZ on Toonami and only suncoast had the tapes with like 2 to 3 episodes per tape, but i knew my parents would never pay that money and i couldnt go to the local Blockbuster and pick them up since that was about a year or 2 away from happening). But I still use VHS as a means today to get really cheap anime if i cant find them on dvd (I take it you guys live in the Raleigh NC area since you brought up Animazement a few times in the episode, so the two places i hit up for tapes is Foundations Edge off Hillsborough and Edward McKay off Captial Blvd whenever i come into town). Yea, its a dead media form but some tapes are worth money if you look around the net due to never being put on DVD.
Didnt mean to talk so much, but enjoyed the episode since this was my first episode listening to you guys. Catcha round!!
Great pod guys! Loved the intro! ^_^
I think you brought up a lot of good points. I find myself as sort of straddling both Gen 1 and Gen 2 although i was more heavily prevalent in Gen 2 with my own personal buying. And while for the record ill say I am fans of both the original BGC and MAC7 (yea yea shoot me later lol) I watch plenty of current anime as well.
I dont really have a mind set as to if i only watched during a set generation period, thats all im going to like, but i have seen how the “flavor” if you will, of anime has shifted from what seemed to be space and big robots of the 90′s through say 2005ish, into lots of moe, fan-service and and even racier stuff than that (Yosuga no Sora anyone? O.0)
I agree that what a person thinks is a “Great Anime!” is completely subjective and if you ask 10 different fans you will get 10 different answers, but I agree with William on the note to go digging into that old anime you dont know about, you might find something you quite like. The same can be said for old curmudgeons trapped in the 80′s vibe. There is new stuff out there that draws on the roots of anime and isnt all fluff and pink and girly. (not that anyone who likes those shows shouldnt watch em lol).
I guess in short I agree pretty much with what was said, and while I DONT know what happens in ep 300 of Bleach (I left off in the Zanpaktou Rebellion?) I DID watch Code Geass and found it quite likable (tho i need to finish season 2). Ill leave the discussion of my own torrenting habits for another time. ^^
P.S. Btw, if either of you ever get in the mood for some Nth generation archaic VHS copies, I can more than supply some
If you got any copies of Gall Force Earth Chapter, Galaxy Express 999 or SDDF Scramble Wars on tape/dvd, Ill put my name in man
. 80′s Devilman is always good too come to think of it.
